Коллоквиум. Billiards in polygons

It is a tradition in the field of dynamical systems to illustrate ideas by applying them to the question of dynamics of billiard orbits in planar billiard tables. In this talk I will show how methods inspired by renormalisation can be used to analyse billiard orbits in polygonal tables. I will consider some simple examples in detail and then suggest how some of the relevant ideas are being used in the field of Teichmüller dynamics.
